26 MAY 2013 - sunday report

Last Cycle event went really good, especially considering the fact that it landed on a Thursday night. Depeche Mode were in town so we figured it might be a good idea to throw an after party in Masters. Haven't played a middle of the week event this crazy in a while. Last time I can remember was Sergej's weekly residency at Fanatic, around 2005/2006.
Following dates regarding Cycle at Masters are 20th of July and 17th of August, which will be a sort of a birthday party. If these dates hold up, looks like we'll be closing and opening the clubbing season in Masters.

22 MAY 2013 - [ZS083] Zero Show feat. Luka K, Gavin Kendrick & Bocca

One of those kinda symmetrical episodes, with three guests evenly distributed across a three hour period. Each hour features one guest and a little something in between to make things interesting.
Gavin Kendrick from Liverpool in the first hour, this time as a spokesman of SuncéBeat festival. Always funky, Bocca Sofistifunk covered the second hour with a conversation about this year's edition of Voi'Sa festival.
Last hour was reserved for Luka Kalinić of the Reform duo. Luka, alongside his partner in crime Nicole, has been throwing a very successful monthly night in Zagreb, so it was a matter of time when he'll land a feature on my show.
Nicole was supposed to come as well, but apparently he was unable to. Ran out of hair mousse, as he explained.

08 MAY 2013 - [ZS081] Zero Show feat. Nitro & Zarkoff/Le Chocolat Noir/FFFC live

Interesting episode to say the least. First hour features a phone conversation with Arsen Pavešić, explaining the current status of Sirup club, followed by an interview with Mario Pandža aka Nitro. He's back in town after a significant amount of time, so I was a bit curious to hear about his life in Ireland.
Zarkoff and Le Chocolat Noir (formerly known as Yas) took over from there and we were switching from conversation to live session and back until the end of the show. Zarkoff, Le Chocolate Noir and their collaboratory Florence Foster Fan Club live sessions all included.
Not surprisingly, the episode's length turned out just 52 seconds over the 4 hours mark. I'm so glad to have the last slot on the programme. Enjoy

14 APR 2013 - sunday report

Friday night was a tough one. I was so sick I barely managed to pull off something that resembled a DJ set. Finished at Tvornica around half past one, and went straight to Moving event in Novi Marof.
One hour of driving and one throw up session later, and I was ready to take over from m50 and finish the night.
Have to say, it would have been impossible without señor Marebito, the godfather. Never underestimate a good sidekick.

Playing the same room with Mr.Mills is always a memorable experience, and this time was no exception. The event was held at the Zagreb Fair complex, one of it's bigger halls. Pete Dux was scheduled to open up, followed by Ivan Komlinović, moi, Jeff, and Petar Dundov for closing.
Jeff delivered three hours of uncompromising techno, backed up with several interventions on the 909. The man really knows how to work that machine.
All in all, another interesting night, I just wish I managed to do an interview with him. Will have to wait for the next time, I guess.

February 4th, 2013 - cycle #04

Fourth Cycle event turned our really good. Examine did his debut Double D (Disko Dabar) live set, made of exclusive edits from classic Herbie Hancock, Bob James, Erykah Badu, Numaads, Quantic Soul Orchestra and Fela Kuti cuts; amongst all others. Even though he spent the whole night before in front of his laptop trying to remove some glitches from the setup, everything went down as planned. Fortunately, we recorded the whole night so you can listen to the live session, or download a selection of Double D edits we made available for this event.
The night was supposed to end around 6 AM but, Masters being Masters, the last record turned into an almost two hours long reggae set. Perfect way to end the night, I loved it.
Next Cycle session - March 8th, with Marko Pelaić aka Homeboy. Same place.

January 16th, 2013 - [ZS065] Zero Show about festivals in Croatia w/Meniga

Despite the fact that certain parts of Zagreb were trapped by snow, all six of us skied to the radio station for a session that turned out equally interesting and entertaining.
In the first hour, Marijo Franić aka FM presented his upcoming single for a local imprint Home Made Electronica called "You Blow My Mind". His first solo work after a while, and a very good one at that. With a little help from his friends, respectful remixers Davor Ostojić and Višeslav Laboš, the title track got two amazing treatments to complement the original. All three of them took turns in front of the mic and gave some insight about what went down during the making of each version.
Second part of the show was co-hosted by Arsen Pavešić. A lengthy conversation about festivals in Croatia and their impact on the local scene, covering some of the pros and cons of the current situation. Featuring probably the most suitable guest for the topic - Vedran Meniga, a publisher, drummer, journalist, DJ, promoter, organizer, producer, and a party animal from Šibenik; also the moving force behind festivals such as Outlook, Dimensions, Seasplash, and Slurp!.

I almost forgot, 明けましておめでとうございます.

January 1st, 2013 - lost tape from Dimensions Festival 2012

I thought I've lost this recording. As it turned out, I only misplaced it amongst other dj sessions and radio shows that were recorded during the last year. Yesterday incidentally, I was going through some unlabeled audio files and ran into this one.
It was an intense weekend to say the least, and I was looking forward to play at the Moat with the R&S Records guys - Pariah, Untold, Space Dimension Controller, Airhead, Lone and AnD. Soundsystem was amazing and I was happy with the way everything went down. Had a chance to meet a few members of the crew; Tom and Grant were both really cool, hope I'll run into those guys next year.

Intense week, to say the least, but in a positive way. Radio show was all over the place; with Ekstrakt crew's Mimi, Novell and Labud as guests, joined later by Ivana Hrvat and Brighton Bluntafar I. Two hours of good music followed by an interview with Ekstrakt's Saturday event guest - Stuart Li aka Basic Soul Unit.
Thursday, Friday and Saturday somehow merged into one, very very long night. Ekstrakt part 1 with an excellent live performance from Convextion on Thursday, Pete's birthday party with Valentino Kanzyani on Friday, and Ekstrakt part 2 with Basic Soul Unit on Saturday. Nice.

November 4th, 2012 - sunday report

Still under the impression of the last show I did with Jogarde. An amazing four hour journey with one of Zagreb's true music connoisseurs. Highly recommended. Next week's show should be equally interesting if everything goes down as planned. Basic Soul Unit interview is confirmed, hopefully there will be another one. I'm still waiting for the signal from the artist in question. Deadbeat interview, previously scheduled for this week, is postponed until mid December.
Weekend turned out great as well; the second CYCLE event went down better than I had hoped for. The boys were really on top of their game. Examine played a very smooth opening set, and Qwerty literally dropped it like it's hot. A lesson in acid house. I did the closing, and finished around 07:15 with a Wackies classic "Mango Walk" by The Chosen Brothers. A really good night with lots of friends. Heads up for the next one - December the 22nd, Santa Claus style. Should be cool, Zero

October 28th, 2012 - sunday report

Interesting Saturday. Two gigs, both different, both good. The evening began with the afterparty for a premiere of a short movie called "Brija", at the old (now defunct) Mosor cinema. Ratko Filipović Examine and Hrvoje Šiljug (Popkomm/Subscriber) from Mehanika label played as well. Hrvoje produced most of the soundtrack for the movie, so the whole crew stopped by to support our boy. Have to give him props, he did a great job. The afterparty was finished around midnight so it was time to move to another location, an old slaughterhouse occasionally used for events.
X-Project, as the party was titled, turned out to be a proper techno night; with Examine, Ivan Komlinović and Pete Dux at the decks. A good way to finish what has began as a more housier affair at Mosor. The closing slot was mine, and a more intense selection took place. Highlights would probably be Moodymann's "9 Nites 2 Nowhere" and Ben Klock's Jack Mix for "Immolate Yourself".

October 10th, 2012 - [ZS051] Zero Show feat. Qwerty

This episode's guest is Miro Merlak aka Qwerty, electronic music producer and a DJ from Rijeka, Croatia. Qwerty's been releasing music from mid 90's so he's been on my radar for quite a while. We played some of his own releases along with the latest one, a collaboratory 7" with the band Marinada. Qwerty did the production on the single and made a remix of the title track. My personal favorite of the feature is "Warn Tine", an exclusive piece of Qwerty's latest work still waiting to find it's place on a release.
Besides the interview, first half of the show is mostly covered with acid; from The Rhythm Odyssey and Motor City Drum Ensemble, to AFX and Chicago Skyway. Enjoy, Zero

An interesting thought from an email I recently received from Chicago's m50, otherwise known as Area: "Clearly, I think it's only a good thing if DJs (and by extension audiences) are encouraged to be more adventurous, personal, and thoughtful in their selections, especially when there are so many marketing & social forces pushing us towards conformity."

August 14th, 2012 - another one from Mr.Mills

"I realised that what the people mostly wanted to hear is the same thing over and over again. As a DJ and producer, when I would try to venture off to present something new or different, it was often met with disappointment, negativity and even hostility. Or, a notion that I lost my way and that it’s over for me. I began to understand that it’s a trap of opinions that so many others have fallen into and become confused as to how to continue to please the people and, in the end, the producer is pulled further and further away from what they would really like to do.
I stopped believing the idea that DJs are only there to play people’s favorite songs and I started to realise more that some people are as informed or even more educated, about music as I am. I started to playing music that I thought that might appeal to those people – the most educated, not the least.
There is this common idea that all DJs must be attentative to their audience, but I disagree. I believe that whatever it takes to make the experience and music more interesting is far more important. When programming music, there is a certain amount of time a DJ has to get their point across. Some DJs use this time by smoking cigarettes and drinking vodka shots, while others are deep in thought and trying to make something unique occur. If I’m thought of as being selfish by not looking at the audience as much, then this is what it’ll have to be in order for me to bring something different. I’m willing to accept this term.
" - Jeff Mills, 2012

July 30th, 2012 - on a different note, Miles Showell

I've just stumbled across an interesting interview on the subject of the everlasting vinyl vs. CD debate. Here's a segment from Ben Watt's interview with a long-time Buzzin' Fly mastering engineer Miles Showell from Metropolis Studios in London.

"While vinyl records are truly capable of extremely high digital-beating fidelity, this can only the case if the record was (1.) cut well at the mastering stage, (2.) processed and pressed well at the factory, which is the really hard part, (3.) then kept clean and stored in ideal conditions and (4.) finally played on a decent turntable with a very well-engineered tone arm fitted with a good and correctly aligned cartridge that in turn has a clean and undamaged stylus all of which needs to feed a high quality RIAA vinyl disc pre-amplifier.
As you can see there are a hell of a lot of 'ifs' in there. Obviously all of the above is very possible but it is difficult and more expensive to really do vinyl records justice. It is just not feasible that all the people who feel records "sound so much better than CD" have been able to achieve all of the above.
It could be that they have very poor CD players (not impossible, as the CD player has been de-engineered of late as domestic audio equipment is being made cheaper and cheaper). Or maybe they are not playing manufactured CDs but home made burns made in computers. The CD burning drives bundled with most home computers leave quite a lot to be desired (poor jitter rates when burning audio CDs especially if they are burn very quickly ie x64 which people tend to do also).
The variability of blank media which can also have a very negative effect on the audio. This is especially apparent at the budget end of the blank CD market. Here at Metropolis we like to use Taiyo Yuden Gold blanks for audio CDs but these cost us something in the region of 70 pence per disc. Very few people in the real word would spend that much on blank CDs when they believe the hype (well, theory really) that it is "digital so makes no difference as long as the 1s and 0s can be read".
A decent mid-priced CD player will probably sound better than a decent mid-priced record player set up in most cases just because a decent turntable, arm, cartridge and RIAA pre-amplifier combinations are more expensive that their CD counterpart as well as difficult to set up correctly and maintain. But, I should also add, a decent turntable could quite easily beat any CD player (regardless of budget) fed with poor quality CDs.
As someone who also loves the vinyl format I am chuffed at its' recent revival, however I am not sure all of the people who profess to hear a difference are really doing fair comparisons.
" - Miles Showell, 2012

July 30th, 2012 - summer break

I'm happy with the way live session went down; actually in the end it turned out better than I expected. Great music, lots of friends and some unexpected moments in front of the camera mos def made the whole idea a success. Studio was on the verge of turning into a proper party situation when certain records were dropped, but there were factors which made it hard to happen. I see room for improvement, and that's something I'll most certainly do for the next session. Season opening in September maybe?

Until then, I'll be on a little break, at least regarding the show. 1st, 8th and 15th of August shows will be replaced with a selected DJ mixes from some of the best Croatian DJs and producers, so I'm sure you won't miss my voice talking over it. I'm back on the 22nd, with new records and interviews for you. Enjoy your summer, Zero

July 23rd, 2012 - season closing on Wednesday the 25th

Next show, and a final one for this season will be a live session with my boys Brighton, Examine, Kelzo, Mimi, Novell and Your Name. Tune in at 8 PM on www.radio808.com for audio or here for audio/video combo.

Here's a bit longer info text, croatian only I'm afraid:

See you online, Zero

July 10th, 2012 - dear diary

10th of July, Zagreb is getting less hectic by the day. Everyone's consumed with their vacation plans and there's slow but consistent reduction of activity. On the coastline, it's exactly the opposite. Open air events, beach parties, festivals; you name it. Looking at my gig schedule at the moment, it seems I'll be spending most of my time in Dalmatia, with occasional trips to Istria and the islands. Highlights mos def include Slurp! and Dimensions festivals in Fort Punta Christo near Pula, and Stop Making Sense festival on the island Murter.
I hope to record some interviews on those festivals, as there are some artists which would fit into my show concept perfectly. We'll see how that goes.
Regarding the show, I've had some interesting guests in the last two months: Zagreb ninja Marijo Franić FM, Danijel Dravinac Novell from the Ekstrakt crew, Delta Funktionen from Holland and a radio exclusive showcase of his debut album for Delsin - "Traces", electro producer from Zagreb called Microslav, Vedran Stihović Your Name from Pula, Donato Dozzy from Rome, Craig Walsh from London with a great acid house mix recorded specially for the show, and last but not the least - another radio exclusive, british electro producer Scape One with a debut album "Sensory Data" from his new project Tau Sagittarii.
Next on schedule, for tomorrow, is Frankfurt's Gerd Janson; a DJ, producer, music journalist and a guy behind the Running Back imprint. 10 PM on www.radio808.com. Zero

July 6th, 2012 - [bond15] Zoran Relić - Involution EP

Fifteenth Bondage release is out, 40 minutes of spaced-out techno trip from the mind of Zoran Relić. Available on Beatport and all the other regular shops. Enjoy, Zero

July 1st, 2012 - Ekstrakt z Bregov, the morning after

Ekstrakt guys have been slowly but surely leaving a mark on Zagreb's clubbing scene. Not a surprising fact, considering the people that make up the crew - Mimi, Luka Baumann Jolka, Ganik, Novell and their latest addition - Labud. Interesting combination of personalities joined by a very eclectic music approach make their nights stand out. The last one was not an exception. Ekstrakt z Bregov, limited edition derivative held once a year on the foothill of Sljeme. Beautiful scenery, a terrace surrounded by the forest and a stream, great lineup, amazing sound and a crowd that knows it's business.
I had a great time playing there and a hard time trying to leave. Now 2 hours of sleep, and off to Hideout Festival. Zero

[bond15] Zoran Relić - Involution EP (out on July 6th, 2012)

In the differential geometry of curves, an involute (also known as evolvent) is a curve obtained from another given curve by attaching an imaginary taut string to the given curve and tracing its free end as it is wound onto that given curve; or in reverse, unwound. It is a roulette wherein the rolling curve is a straight line containing the generating point. For example, an involute approximates the path followed by a tetherball as the connecting tether is wound around the center pole. If the center pole has a circular cross-section, then the curve is an involute of a circle.

June 24th, 2012 - Stop Making Sense 2012 Launch Party at Masters

Amazing night at Masters with Madera Verde, Examine and Brighton. Can't wait for the next b2b with Examine. September 22nd, same place, same time. Zero

June 17th, 2012

"I, like so many others in this profession, was young and had not lived enough life to understand what it’s all about – what its all for. For instance, I know now that the term ‘Techno’ is irrelevant. It is what is being said with the sound of Techno that is most important. Vinyl vs. CD vs. digital vs. what else will surely come is a useless debate. These are only carriers of the Music, and have little bearing on the information it’s carrying." - Jeff Mills, 2011

April 29th, 2012 - sunday report

Interesting prolonged weekend in Zagreb. First of all - the web site is finally online. It's been in development for way over a year now, since I've only had time in between other projects to sit down with Goran and work. Props to him - he's been very smooth in handling numerous changes and additions, and managed to incorporate all ideas into a clean and functional site. Thanks bro!

Party report - Friday night's Zero Session at Lemon, this time with Examine, sounded great but the attendance was lower than usual. Partly due to the sunny prolonged weekend which got half of Zagreb out of town, and party due the lack of promotion. Nevertheless, it was fun to play back2back with Examine after a long time. I've made a mental note to repeat it as soon as possible. Afterparty was held at Masters and the night ended around 9 AM. Solid.

Saturday afternoon was scheduled for an interview with two members of an Italian dub collective Imperial Sound Army - Dan I and Sista Miky, due to their gig at AKC Attack. They both turned out to be very nice, easygoing people and left me with a bunch of exclusive dubs. Win. We had lunch today just before they went home, Dan to Feltre and Sista to Venice, and made plans to meet in Šibenik somewhere around the beginning of August.

Easy lee Sunday in Zagreb. Zero

26 FEB 2012 - Radiohead_Airport Session

Radiohead_Airport Session

recorded live 26.02.2012

I've had the idea of recording a Radiohead mix in my head for a while now, I even thought about the possible tracklist but never seemed to take the time to finish it and press record.
One day in February, I found myself sitting in Zagreb airport at 5AM, waiting for the flight to Paris with nothing to do. Fortunately there was no wifi, so I went back to the playlist containing possible songs for the mix and did the whole tracklist. Two days after I got back to Zagreb, I recorded it.

February 20th, 2012 - Paris and the Laurent Garnier Special

Just got home from a perfect week in Paris. My girlfriend's staying there until June so I managed to take a week off and escape Zagreb. I had to pre-record the show for that week so, given the whole Paris situation, I decided to do a Laurent Garnier Special. I've been a huge fan of Laurent's music since I started buying records, and this was a perfect opportunity to present a part of his discography in my show. The show went on air as planned, got released on the internet the following day, and even got support from the man himself. Thanks Laurent, Zero

Tracklisting:

Communication From The Lab, Marl Chingus - 6 Months Earlier (Edit), Alaska aka Laurent Garnier - At Night (Edit), Greed (Avril Radio Mix), Jeux d'enfants, Acid Eiffel [Live], Crispy Bacon, Barbiturik Blues, DJ Marky & XRS - Butterfly (Laurent Garnier Remix), Alex Attias - 10.000 Leagues (Remixed By Laurent Garnier/ Wake Lab Mix), Coloured City, City Sphere, Tres Demented - Demented [Laurent Garnier Edit], Man With The Red Face (Live Recording With Bugge Wesseltoft)

January 31st, 2012 - [ZSE03] Zero Session #03

January 6th, 2012 - new Bondage release

I've just received masters for the next Bondage release, still untitled EP from Zoran Relić, uprising young producer from Zagreb with a distinct sound. I've been on the watchout for Zoran ever since he sent me his first pack of demos. Those weren't quite suitable for Bondage, but the unique sound of those tracks made me certain that something from him is gonna land on my label sooner or later. About a month ago I received another demo pack from him, played some of the tracks on the radio show, and one thing led to another. Abstract and trippy stuff, maybe not for everyone but certainly very interesting for me. The release [bond15] consists of three original tracks - "Feba I Japet", "False Colour Mosaic" and "Cepheld", with mastering handled by Petar Dundov in Neumatik Studio. I'm not sure about the release date since I'm going through another distributor change, but I'm hoping to get it out during February/March. Zero

October 17th, 2011 - UES with Dave Clarke

United Electronic Sound guys pulled out the big guns for their anniversary party this year. Dave Clarke headlined the main room in Boogaloo Club, and the result was another proper rave under the UES signature. I was scheduled to perform after Dave, but somehow ended up playing the second part of the warmup as well as the finishing set due to N-ter's laptop trouble. I get a bit nostalgic when I see a situation like that, but I guess every kind of DJ setup has it's own set of possible issues. At the end, the event turned out quite well and at certain moments the atmosphere reminded me of the old Boogaloo days. Zero

October 27th, 2010

Petar Dundov's birthday party and the new Music Man single promotion was insane! So far one of my favourite parties this year. The whole crew was there (and at their best behaviour) plus a lot of people who I haven't seen at the party in ages. The night ended at 7:30 AM with a triple back to back with Petar and Zoran. Very nice. Zero

October 23rd, 2010 - live recording from United Electronic Sound 2nd Anniversary party in Stara Klaonica (Old Slaughterhouse) in Zagreb (07.10.2011)

October 6th, 2010

I've decided to put to use Korg Kaoss Pad 3 that's been sitting on the shelve for the good part of the last two years. I was a bit disappointed with the unit as it turned out to be a very limited effects processor, and the effect themselves weren't done very subtly. I knew it can be used as a midi controller, and messed around with that some time ago but never tried to implement it into an actual setup. Now that I've taken some time to set it up properly with Traktor, it works great! I've programmed some pretty complex macros which should make the actual performance easier and a lot of functions more accessible. Roadtesting tomorrow at UES party in Zagreb. Zero

August 27th, 2010 - release schedule

I'm really excited about the next couple of releases for Bondage. First in line is Rotation (bond10) by Zagreb's minimal techno producer Davor Tosovic (ex. Shuma), scheduled somewhere around the middle of October. Next is Pyrone (bond11) by german duo Cortechs, scheduled for the second half of November. Last for this year but certainly not the least interesting is Parallel Thinking EP (bond12) by another talent from Zagreb, Mario Franic aka FM, scheduled somewhere around the middle of December.
